Shige Yoshise Mitchum

Ms. Shige Yoshise Mitchum, 89, of Albany, peacefully passed away at her home on Monday, May 30, 2022. The family will host a memorial service at a later date. Born March 25, 1933, in Okinawa, Japan she was the daughter of the late Chusei and Kamaro Yoshise. She is descended from the royal family of Okinawa’s Southern Kingdom, whose ancestral home is Shuri Castle. When Japan annexed this kingdom in 1879, the royal family lived in exile on Iheya Jima, a small island northwest of the main island of Okinawa. Shige was a World War II survivor, experiencing the U.S. invasion of Okinawa in 1945 as a young girl, of which her father was a civilian causality. Ms. Mitchum spent her years as a homemaker caring for her family. She enjoyed traditional Okinawan song and dance, gardening, and cooking for her family. A loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she will be greatly missed by those who knew her and remembered for her love and compassion. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her two sons, Jimmy Mitchum and Leon Mitchum; son-in-law, Ricky Eubank; and siblings, Nobuko Wadas and Chuta Yoshise. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Hiroko Eubank of Jupiter, FL, and Stephen Mitchum (Jackye) of Albany; daughters-in-law Robin Mitchum (Leon), Pamela Mitchum(Jimmy); eight grandchildren, Jonathan Eubank, Christopher Mitchum (Elizabeth), Amy McHugh (Chris), Tyler Mitchum, Jacob Mitchum, Ethan Mitchum, Tanner Mitchum, Nicholas Mitchum; and three great grandchildren, Ava and Anabelle Mitchum and Maela McHugh.
