Mr. Addrian Ladonn Sawyer, 90, of Albany, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, August 11, 2014. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Lakeside Baptist Church. Rev. Ken Chancellor will officiate with interment to follow at Andersonville National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Born December 22, 1923 in Hopeful, GA., Mr. Sawyer was the son of the late Lemuel and Autry Lois Mercer Sawyer. He was a proud World War II veteran of the United States Navy and also served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. Since his enlistment on June 16, 1941, he served in many challenging assignments including duty on board destroyers, hospital ships, navel hospitals and navel Air Stations. He earned the Navy Unit Commendation, nine good conduct awards, the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He concluded his years in the Navy as an E-9 with 30 dedicated years of service. Mr. Sawyer worked for Coats and Clark, was a life member of the VFW, volunteered with the Red Cross and obtained a degree from Darton Jr. College. He loved Lakeside Baptist Church where he was a faithful member. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Simmons Sawyer of Albany; daughters and son-in-law, Marilyn and Buford Norton of Albany and Linda Gerlock; step-daughters, Elizabeth and Jim Elliott of Albany, Sharon and Bonnell Bentley of Sale City; step-sons, Marcus Henley Simmons of Camilla and Ronald and Bridgette Simmons of Germany; brothers, Ronald Sawyer of Midland and Michael Sawyer of Ellerslee; sisters, Faye Osteen of Delray Beach, FL., and Judy Piccirillo of Tampa, FL.; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sawyer was preceded in death by his first wife Virginia Sawyer; son, William Billy Arthur Sawyer; step daughter-in-law, Valencia Simmons; brothers, Lemuel, Solon, Wayne and Gilbert. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 13, 2014 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Hall and Hall Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to Affinis Hospice, Wounded Warriors or Disabled Veterans.
