Alice Marguerite Gillette, 97, passed away September 2, 2018 at her home. Her remains will lie with her husband, Walter J. Gillette, and a private memorial service will be held at Andersonville National Cemetery at a later date. Born in Blida, Algeria, she hailed from very poor beginnings and left school at the age of 12 to help support her widowed mother and many siblings. She met and married USAF MSgt Walter Gillette during World War II in 1943. In 1944, she and her newborn son set sail to the United States on a transport ship. As a military wife for 23 years, with no command of the English language and an 8th grade education, she kept us together, safe, fed, warm, and unconditionally loved. Together, they gave us all that we ever needed. Their 50-year union produced Robert Andre Gillette (BR) – deceased 2014, Gerald Joseph Gillette (Lee Eltzroth), and Darlene Gillette Presley. Surviving grandchildren are Beverly Montgomery (Shaw), B.J. Gillette, Alison GP Wakeford (Donald); and great grandchildren Hadyn and Emily Montgomery. Our family wishes to express sincere thanks to Deborah J. Burnette who helped Moma fulfill her wish to live out her days at home with tenderness, love, and laughter and Rita C. Taylor, Dr. Bernard Scoggins and his nurse Carolyn for being there when needed. Repose en paix et sans confinement, mere. Our love for you is eternal. Thank you for your devotion, strength, compassion, simplicity, love of family, life, music, and dance. The care for the Gillette family has been entrusted to Hall and Hall Funeral Home.
