Mrs. Barbara Jean Poe Smith, 79, of Baconton, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at her home. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 14, 2018 in the Crown Hill Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Born August 19, 1938 in Corona, AL, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Norman V. Poe and Rachel Thomas Poe. Barbara was a graduate of Oakman Alabama High School and later was proud to become a military spouse. She did extensive traveling through the U.S. with her beloved husband and children. Mrs. Smith worked in many schools as a volunteer library assistant and playground supervisor. She also participated in several club activities and served as an elected officer, including President, of the Staff NCO Wives Club at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany. She also worked at the commissary, package store and at the Marine Corps Exchange. She was an avid bowler having won many trophies, and enjoyed reading and needle work. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her two sisters, Janie Poe and Norma Dean Poe Garrett. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Charles F. Smith; her two daughters, Vicki Hammons (Rich) of Tybee Island, GA and Melissa Salyer of Albany; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
