Hugh Herschel Smith

Mr. Hugh Herschel Smith, 96, of Lawrenceville and formerly of Albany, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2015 in the chapel of Hall and Hall Funeral Home. Rev. Bobby Moye will officiate with interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Mr. Smith was born on January 13, 1919 in Carrollton to the late Hugh Buchanan Smith and Nora Levens Smith. He enlisted in the Army in June of 1941 and was trained as a medical technician in Hot Springs, Arkansas before being sent to North Africa. After serving in North Africa and Italy with the Fifth Army, he was awarded with the Eamet medal and numerous Good Conduct Medals. After a honorable discharge in December 1945, he attended a Voc-Tech school in Nashville TN. for automotive repair. He then came to Albany at the suggestion of his brother, Frank, who was a pilot trainer at Turner Field Air Force Base. He first worked at Miller Buick for a short time before opening his own garage. He owned and operated Hugh Smith's Garage for 50 Years in Albany before closing the doors for the final time and selling the building on 1320 East Broad Ave. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ramona Moree Smith. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and Scott McCollum of Albany, Gail and Charlie Hill of Snellville and Angela Schwab of Plymouth, MN; as well as his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Lisa Smith of Dacula; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Hall and Hall Funeral Home.
