James Tillman Salter

Mr. James Tillman Salter, 94, of Owego, NY, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the Elderwood Nursing Home in Waverly, NY. “Jim”, as he was known by his family and friends, was born September 13, 1916 in Omega, GA, son of the late Jesse James Salter and Ange Bryant Salter. Jim grew up in Albany, GA and attended school here. Throughout Jim’s high school years, he excelled in football, basketball and track and field for which he received numerous awards. He served in the U.S. Army in Panama for two years and later served in the U.S. Navy for twenty-four years until his retirement. During his Army service, he participated in track and field events and also coached the basketball team. While serving in the Navy, Jim traveled the world and following his retirement, he traveled extensively with his wife Marion throughout the Untied States. They also enjoyed spending their winter months in Florida for many years. Jim also enjoyed camping and woodworking. Though Jim never had children of his own, he enjoyed his step-children, 22 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marion Carman Horton Walker Salter whom he married on April 16, 1981; step-children, Duane Horton and wife Beatrice “Petie”, Gary Horton, Chuck Horton and wife, Molly, Alan Walker and wife Debby Ann, Shelda Hopkins and husband, Bob, Lynn Walker and wife, Lorraine, Lyle Walker and wife Katy, Debbie Hanford and husband, Mark; sisters, Louise Hammett of Augusta, GA, Daphene Brock of Baconton, GA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude V. Rodden Salter; sister, Carnell “Nell” Humphries; and brother, George Salter. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in the Andersonville National Cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to Mountain Chapel, 2070 Sulphur Springs Road, Owego, NY. 13827 or to Elderwood Senior Care, 44 Ball St. Waverly, NY 14892 in James Tillman Salter’s memory.
