MSGT William H. Smith, 92, of Albany, passed away peacefully at his home the morning of Monday, April 9, 2018. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 12, 2018 in the chapel of Hall and Hall Funeral Home. Bro. Bobby Hall and Jason Mercer will officiate with interment to follow at Floral Memory Gardens. Mr. Bill Smith, as everyone knew him, served in the United States Army and retired from the United States Air Force. He fought in and survived three wars and was honored to serve his country. Upon his retirement he became very active in his church and community. He was a volunteer for the YMCA and helped with stroke patients in water aerobics. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Thomaston and the American Legion Post 30 of Albany. Mr. Smith was a faithful member of Sunnyside Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Eugene Smith and Mary Walker Smith and his beloved wife, Minnie Smith. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon S. Herring and James Herring of Cairo; five grandchildren, Jason Mercer, Jennifer Mercer, Heather Collins, Ashley Mercer and Megan Herring; 7 great-grandchildren; his brother, Marvin E. Smith; 2 sisters, Martha Bridgman Ellerbee and Josephine Starnes and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Hall and Hall Funeral Home.
