Mrs. Nadine Martha Mathis, 97, of Albany, passed away Friday, March 30, 2018. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 2, 2018 at Riverside Cemetery in Albany. Rev. Scott Stanfill will officiate. Born April 8, 1920 in Thomas County, GA, Mrs. Mathis was the daughter of the late Alton A. Carter and Lucy Mae White Carter. She lived in Tampa Florida for a while and graduated from Hillsborough High School. She later moved to Coolidge, GA and in 1936 she married Elkin Mathis. They moved to Albany in 1940 and together owned and operated Mathis Groceries for seventeen years. Mrs. Mathis later worked at other places including manager at K-mart, Phoebe Putney Dietary, and Crispy Cream for over 30 years. She also enjoyed volunteering for Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and visiting the local nursing homes. Mrs. Mathis frequently enjoyed writing to the local newspapers on different issues that were often published and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, Elkin Mathis and two children, Jean Cross and Ronald Mathis. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda Dean Mathis Smith and Sam Smith of Albany; her son, Kenneth Mathis of Albany; grandchildren, Samuel Sikes Smith, David Bryan Smith, Chris Mathis, Tracey Mathis, Trever Mathis, Terri Cross, David Cross and several great-grandchildren.
